12 Memory Verses for Children

I must confess, I grossly underestimated how smart toddlers can be until I started having children. I watched in awe as my children would memorize things so quickly and would never forget. I would ask them after a long period of time and they would remember every detail. They would learn all sorts of rhymes and silly songs, phonics, ABCs, basic science, social studies and all the other stuff secular curriculum has to offer. That is when I made the decision to incorporate bible verses into the stuff the learn and memorize, not only will this knowledge be of immense value to them in the future, it helps me memorize more verses because let’s face it, memorizing these things are more difficult when you are an adult. However, repeating the verses over and over again with them helps me memorize and learn more.  The verses in this post are easy to learn but I would advise that you be patient with them as they learn and do not insist on instant perfection. Teach gracefully and make it fun, that way they would be excited to learn more. I do one verse per week and also do not fret if you miss a week, just pick up from where you stopped. I was intention about the verses I picked out, children from 2 years old can memorize this. Kindly leave me feedback via email, Instagram or Facebook if this works for you.

Vain Arguments…

Many of the arguments you think are of benefit to the body of Christ are distractions sent straight from the pit of Hell! Do not fall for them! You know what the Bible says, read and ask the Holy Spirit to minister to you as you read! You have no business arguing the things of God with carnal minds and I mean this.

Remember what 1 Corinthians 2:14 says:

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

By the grace of God, I am now able to ignore certain things. I know once in a while when controversy comes up, we need to put our spiritual convictions and Biblical truths out there but I honestly believe that dwelling on those controversies are not what God has called us to do. Have you also noticed that when you dwell on those controversies it could cause you to sin? Like anger, profanity etc. In this Christian race, discernment is essential, we are asked to judge (yes!!! I used the dreaded J word), we are asked to judge righteously.

“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

John 7:24 KJV

“But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.”

1 Corinthians 2:15 KJV

“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;”

Philippians 1:9 KJV

“Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?”

1 Corinthians 6:2-3 KJV

Many of the people who stir up these controversies that do not in anyway edify the body of Christ are satanic agents and the unfortunate thing is they will more often than not succeed in dragging down people with them. Many will forsake biblical Doctrines they once knew just because of these satanic agents. Be careful people, these last days are brutal! We underestimate how busy Satan is even when we have been warned severally in the scriptures.

In the words of Pastor Ukpabio:

The word of God is a revelation from the spirit of God. Only those with it can understand it. That’s why the Bible in the hands of an atheist or unbeliever produces silly doctrines and misguided interpretations. It’s not human Wisdom.

But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. -Titus 3:9

A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; -Titus 3:10

The Bible says speak once , then a second time then leave him alone. That’s why it’s important, that before having religious arguments or confrontations, say a short word of prayer and tell the Holy Spirit to open their eyes and give them understanding. This tip comes in handy when you are having one on one conversations with people as opposed to the social media controversies we see these days.

Jesus did the same thing when he was on earth, So many times when he spoke, they did not understand and he emphatically told them that:

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. -John 6:63

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. -John 6:64

So what he spoke was Spirit. So once it got too complicated and they could not understand because they didn’t have the Holy Spirit, Jesus opened their eyes and gave them understanding to know scriptures

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, -Luke 24:45

I pray that God will give us the grace not to be led astray by carnally minded people who use the scriptures to make a name for themselves. I also pray that no matter how liberating, logical or empowering these false teachers sound, God should keep us steadfast in His word and service till our time is up on earth.

Dear Mum,do you have idols?

img_1203

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Let me begin with something you already know and that is: God is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5). Now, what is an idol? One of the definitions of idol according to Oxford Learners Dictionary is a statue that is worshipped as God. This definition is what most of us are familiar with as far as idol worship is concerned especially those of us in Africa. However, there is another definition and that is a person or thing that is loved and admired very much. The Webster dictionary also defines idolatry as excessive devotion or reverence for a person or thing.

One of the best definitions I have come across is by April Cassidy who rightly points out that anything that we believe we must have to be happy that isn’t Christ is an idol. A very simple and straightforward definition. In modern times, idolatry has progressed beyond bowing in front of images and statutes. Let me also add that idols could be persons, ideas, loyalties or things that take center stage in our lives (which is where Christ should be). So you see, idolatry can also be a matter of the heart. For the purpose of this article, I would focus on three modern idols Christian mothers tend to accommodate: Marriage, Husbands and Children.

1. Marriage

Marriage‬‬ is ordained by God and is a sacred thing (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19:4-6‬). However, God never intended for it to take His place in our lives. The entire purpose of marriage is to glorify God as well as mirror the marriage of Jesus Christ to the church (Colossians 1:16, Matthew 23:20, Matthew 22:30).

Our earthly marriage will pass away but you know something, there will be an even greater marriage in heaven- the marriage between Christ and the church. In Hebrews 13:4 we see that marriage is honorable. In the amplified version honor is explained as something of great value which means that while we treasure marriage and strive to please God in our marriages, our marriages are not as important as God Himself. DO NOT PLACE YOUR MARRIAGE BEFORE GOD.

How many of us are so obsessed with the thoughts of having a great marriage that it consumes our thoughts daily?

My advice is give God His place in your life and marriage otherwise you will miss out on the great marriage that is to take place in heaven. After all, our fleshly marriage is only a reflection of the greater marriage to come. Remember Jesus is often referred to as the Bridegroom and the church His bride ( John 3:29, Matthew 22:1-4, Revelation 19:7-9).

2. Husbands.

The interesting thing here is that many people who idolize their husbands do not even realize that they do this. I know this for sure because I have actually been there and in my case, I only began to know peace when I gave God his rightful place. I guess unreasonably high expectations may be one of the reasons spouses in general become idols. Are you looking to your husband to fulfill your every need? You do not need to idolize your spouse in order to be happy, in fact doing so brings about the exact opposite. How much do you rely on your husband who by the way is human? Do you seek from your husband things you should seek from God such as wisdom, love, inspiration etc. I am not saying your husband should not inspire or love you however seek those things from God first. Your husband is human and his abilities and strength may fail you- remember that your husband should also be totally dependent on God. Stop wanting your husband to be EVERYTHING!

3. Children

This one has a two pronged effect. You see when our children become idols, not only do we hurt ourselves but we hurt them too. When our children become the center of our lives and trying to make them constantly happy becomes the paramount thing, we err. When your children become idols everything else suffers- time with God, time with your spouse, finances (because you want to buy EVERYTHING you possibly can for them). I need to reiterate that I am not saying you should not make your children happy but often parents who make this the paramount thing in life often fail to discipline their children and teach them right from wrong. Every and anything the children do is okay. Sometimes we compromise on Godly principles and standards just to keep them happy and rather than correct them, we say things like “they are only kids” even when the children in question are old enough to be held accountable for certain behaviors.

The Bible says children are a blessing (a gift from the Lord Psalm 127:3-5) but they are not our sufficiency. They are not our all in all. Christ is our sufficiency (2 Corinthians 3:5, 2 Corinthians 9:8).

While we do not and will probably never explicitly admit even to ourselves that we have idolized our marriages, husbands and children, our actions speak otherwise. I thank God for showing me this aspect of my life and I also felt the need to share with others.

Making time for God when there is no time at all.

whether you are a stay at home mum or a working mum, you can agree with me that we barely have enough time. Our to-do-lists seem to be never ending and on most days, we have several items we do not check off our lists and schedules.

It should not surprise you to know that you are not alone.

For many people, there is this feeling of being distant or disconnected from God. You know you should spend time with God, you know it has been a while, you miss communing with God, you miss hearing from God but you need to do the dishes, get the house cleaned up, go to school, go to work, write a ton of reports, prepare food, go to the market etc. You simply do not have the time and you honestly feel like God understands the depths of your heart and he knows really well that given the ‘time’ you would pray and study the word.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33

The one thing to note is that sacrifice is essential for any relationship to thrive. The truth is, you can always find time for God. Do you love God enough to sacrifice time for Him?

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.Matthew 14:23

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. Mark 1:35

My dad recently told me something about ‘tithe of time’. Very interesting. He said we tithe on our money which is good but what of our time? What is ten percent of 24 hours? That is the minimum time we should spend with God everyday. These words pierced deep into my soul, I never saw it from that angle. I spent a full week wondering where I could get at least 2 hours and 15 minutes to spend with God. Turns out I did not even have to look too far.

Everytime I wake up. I meet my husband studying and making notes. He wakes up an hour or two earlier than he should, that is when He studies the Bible and i decided to follow suit. On the days I have to go to school (it is a 3-4 hour journey), I read my Bible on the road. And you know with technology, the Bible app is very handy. This goes way beyond reading one verse or checking out the verse of the day. Read chapters. Make notes. Read. Pray.

Just Read and keep on reading.

It is all about priorities. For instance, On the long journey to school, I could listen to music all they way, read a novel or even sleep (cos Lord knows I need sleep…lol) but spending time with God is important, so important that the other options simply do not matter.

That is my story. Now it is your turn, how is your schedule? You want to pray, you want to read the word of God but you are too caught up with life to do that. How much time do you spend on social media? Can you sacrifice that time for God? How much time do you spend on reading books that do not any way or form enhance your spiritual life? Give that time to God. How much time do you spend on movies and tv shows? Give that time to God.

There is an interesting story in Acts 24:24-27 of Felix who had a chance to be saved but said the time was not convenient. You miss out on a lot when you do not spend time with God. How do you even grow spiritually? How do you hear from God? How do find guidance and purpose in life?

Which of these excuses sound familiar: ‘Let me take a nap, I will spend time with God when I wake up’, ‘As soon as the demands from work reduce, I will have time for God’, ‘I will find time when…’

When it comes to spending time with God, do not procrastinate. If sin is the reason you seem to never have time for God, deal with that sin. Have a relationship with God not a one night stand. God needs committed people who love Him and are willing to spend time with Him. Are you one? Are you willing to be one?

When you are afraid…

David faced so many trials, most of them were life threatening. The only way he survived was by completely trusting God. Being a believer means becoming a warrior. Yes. They go together, kind of like a package deal. The devil will target you if you are a believer, the devil will relentlessly war against you to destroy your faith and confidence in God. So many people have lost faith in the course of their walk with God due to trials and adversities. Many times, he even attacks your testimony as a believer and even fellow members of the body of Christ may doubt you. Do not be shaken. Let me repeat, do not be shaken. I love Psalm 27 so much and I love the fact that David always turned to God for hope and vindication in times of trials. If you are passing through similar times, read this psalm over and over again. Develop the heart of a warrior just like David. Focus on God and you will be victorious.

Faithful Motherhood

Quotes_Creator_20170823_073200-1.png

The sons of Eli the priest were unruly and they dishonoured God time and time again. Eli could not discipline his children. Eli was a busy man, busy working for the Lord while neglecting his family but you know something, God did not see it that way.

1 Samuel 2:12-36

According to the laws given in Numbers 15:22-31, Eli’s sons should have been executed. Perhaps that was why he could not confront the situation. However, God had to step in. Hophni and Phinehas were seducing women who came to the tabernacle to worship, they treated the offerings of the Lord with contempt and they were unruly.

When God called Samuel, He told Samuel what he would do to Eli who could not control his children. Samuel was still a boy at this time.

1 Samuel 3:10-15

Many years later, the boy Samuel had become a grown man with a family of his own. He served God in several ramifications: as a judge, a priest and a prophet. Remember, Samuel was an answer to Hannah’s prayer and Hannah handed him over to God. however, Samuel just like Eli could not control his children. His children were nothing like him. They took bribes and perverted judgements

1 Samuel 8:3-5

They were so bad that the people would rather have a king rule over them than continue in the system of priests and judges. When you dedicate your life to serving God, grooming children with the fear of God is part of the service.

Discipline and correction is part of love. when you leave your children to behave however they like, know that there will be a day of reckoning. We are in the era of the new covenant so God would require you or anyone else to execute your child for perpetual wrongful doing but remember that their eternity is at stake and you will give an account to God on how you raised your child.

This is why I encourage parents to pray for their children even before they are born and the prayers should not stop when they are born. In James 5:16, we see that the effectual fervent prayers of a righteous person avails much, and James 2:20 &26 tells us that faith without works is dead. While we pray and trust God to keep our children in the ways of the Lord, we still need to do the needful.

Teach them, guide them, caution, correct, discipline and pray for them. Hophni and Phinehas had a terrible end and it is my earnest prayer that my children and the children of those reading this post will fear the Lord and love Him for who He is. Let us be faithful mothers. Let us be the faithful parents God has called us to be.

Memory verses for children

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.SONY DSC

It is important to teach our children the word of God and the earlier the better. I taught my first son the first memory verse when he was about two and a half. It was “One Lord, one faith, one baptism- Ephesians 4:5”. It was such a joyous moment to hear him recite it. I must confess, I had taught him that verse with the hopes that he would be able to recite in the children’s week of that year (in front of the whole church) because children in the church I attend often do Bible recitations. When it became apparent that He would not be able (and would not even be steady) to recite in public, I decided to wait another year till when he would be a little more mature. This year, I resumed with the memory verses and it has been fantastic. The best part is, my second son who is two years old memorizes the verses too. I love how excited they are about each new verse and how they excitedly recap the verses of the previous week.

And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.Deuteronomy 11:19

When I was a child, my parents taught us in this way too. Believe me when I say, it never departs from your children. To this very day, I remember most of those verses. Sometimes, when it seemed we could not memorize certain verses, my mum made it into a song to enable us learn faster.God is awesome and I am thankful for the opportunity God has given me to raise future members of His army. Children have so much trust in their parents that they will learn whatever we teach them. Read Bible stories to them, make it fun and exciting, read to them over and over again and make it interactive. Stimulating their interest in God is for your own good (well…and theirs too).

I realized that when I recite the memory verses with my children over and over again, It also helps me learn the verses i never knew. So get on board. From time to time, I will post some of the verses my children have learnt and are learning as guide for those who are willing to introduce memory verse learning to their children. Stay tuned!!!

We will not hide them from their children,
shewing to the generation to come
the praises of the Lord, and his strength,
and his wonderful works that he hath done. Psalm 78:4

To the envious mom…

0

Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:26)

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying (Romans 13:13)

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones (Proverbs 14:30)

Envy is the desire of something that belongs to someone else, this desire often causes resentment and discontentment. Harold Coffin said envy is when we count our neighbour’s blessings instead of our own. I find that to be pretty accurate. Envy is typically a negative emotion and all the biblical references of envy or envious emotions point towards negativity.

Becoming a mom got me thinking seriously about envy as a sin I have often overlooked. The thing is, I have often found myself in situations like what I described in the previous paragraph. Wanting what the children of other people have etc as opposed to realising that my life is different and my children have their own needs which may not necessarily be the same as other people’s needs. In this age of social media, it is even more common and easier to get stuck on the lives of others while forgetting that we have our own lives to focus on.

Envy is one of those sins that begets several other sins such as covetousness and strife(which God specifically warned against). Unaddressed envy can ruin lives, marriages and even our relationship with God- I know this for certain because I have been there, It is really hard to focus on God when you are too busy daydreaming about having the life you think someone else has and detesting them for having a ‘good life’. Many people have gone as far as finding ways to outshine the other person or wishing ill towards the person they envy (1 Corinthians 3:3, Colossians 3:5, Exodus 20:17, Mark 7:21-23)

Envy is a sin!!! (Galatians 5:21, 1 Peter 2:1, )

Thankfully, we have a remedy for sin.

Repent!!! (1 John 1:9, Romans 12:21)

Talk to God about this demonic spirit (James 3:14-16).

Envy would make you aspire to be like someone else so much that you struggle to measure up. So many people are ‘competing’ with people who really have no idea about them. I guess in a way, this can be idolatry because someone else has become the standard. Remember the first commandment? (Exodus 20:3, Ephesians 5:5).

Many times, the people we envy are unbelievers and the word of God has strictly warned against that. (Proverbs 23:17, 24:19).

If you want your marriage to work, envying another person’s marriage does not help.

If you want obedient and responsible children, envying another person’s seemingly well adjusted children is definitely not the answer.

I have heard several people say envy can be a good thing or a good motivataor, unfortunately the Bible does not say so. Time and time again, believers have been warned against any form of envy.

Her children call her blessed – Proverbs 31:28

I know people talk about Proverbs 31 a lot however, the first part of verse 28 caught my attention a few days ago.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Proverbs 31:28 KJV

My children do not call me blessed. Well, they are 3 years old, 2 years old and 2 months old. When I lived with my parents, I never called my mum blessed despite the fact that she is a good mother. Maybe I was too stuck up or too stupid but as an adult I can proudly say my mother is a blessed woman.

The truth is, as mothers, a lot of the stuff we do may go unnoticed but you know something? A day will come when they will look back and understand everything you have done. They will call you blessed.

Do not give up!!! Even when you feel discouraged. Cast your burdens upon the Lord, Jesus is the affirmation you need.
PRAYER GUIDE:

Thank You Lord for my family, help me to serve them with love and joy. In my weakness, be my strength. Comfort me when I feel discouraged. Help me to appreciate good days and to remember such days when I feel overwhelmed In Jesus Name. Amen.
