Set Your Mind on Things Above

As believers, we need to understand that we are not of this world- John 17:14
I have given them Your word and the world has hated them; for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

We are supposed to be heavenly minded. Colossians 3:2 says set your affection on things above, the question is, what are these things? Note that ‘set your affection…’ implies a deliberate attempt. Meaning that, we know or should know what those things are and fix our minds on those things above. The verse further mentions ‘…not things on earth’ clearly marking a distinction between the things above and the earthly things.

This is a clear indication that the things of this world are NOT the things of heaven and it is very important that we know the difference.

We need to set our minds on: God, eternity, salvation, christian virtues and holy living. Philippians 4:8 {“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”} tells us what we need to focus on.

This does not mean we should abandon our earthly responsibilities and ambitions. However, we should realise that they are of subordinate importance. Our work, health, family, money, academics etc are very much important here on earth but they are not eternal.

Being heavenly minded means:

  • Loving what Jesus loves
  • Viewing everything in our lives from God’s perspective
  • Judging ourselves and eliminating habits that are ungodly
  • edifying God in EVERYTHING we do

Reexamine your life: what occupies your mind on a daily basis? What music do you listen to? What TV shows do you enjoy? How often do you spend time with God?
