7 Characteristics of Godly Friendships

1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us that all we do should glorify God. In this context, our friendships should glorify God. People who watch or observe our friendships should be pointed to Christ. Our friendships should be a form of service to God.

From the various Biblical examples, friendship is a valued relationship which actually involves caring for someone else other than yourself . one thing is certain, friendship is a gift and we definitely need to appreciate God for the gift of friendship everyday. As with every other area of our lives, we need God in our friendships. If you do not have friends and you actually want friends, remember that to find a friend you need to be a friend (Proverbs 18:24).

7 Characteristics of Godly friendships

1) Godly friendships draw us closer to God. They encourage us in the faith ( Psalm 119:63). The Godly values of your friends will surely rub off on you. If you are struggling with your faith, you may be hanging around the wrong people (Amos 3:3).

2) Friends are always truthful. A friend who is Godly will not spare the truth. No, not even when it hurts. Lies and flattery are not righteous attributes (Proverbs 27:5-6).

3) Carefully select your friends. Not everyone can be a close friend too. Ask God for discernment when choosing friends. It is often said that quality trumps quantity. Wrong friendships are detrimental to our Christian lives (Proverbs 22:24-25, 16:29, 13:20).

4) Godly friend set and respect boundaries. In Proverbs 25:17, the Bible asks us to give boundaries or space to our friends. Generally speaking, our God is a God of boundaries. We have freedom in Christ but there are limits to the things we do e.g. we do not worship other gods or idols.

5) Friendship should be reciprocal in nature. Because friendship is a two way street, to thrive, both parties need to contribute. This is a very important feature of friendship and it should not be overlooked. When one person does all the listening, giving, caring, loving, praying etc, it is not a friendship (Proverbs 27:17, 19).

6) Godly friendships should have honour and respect. Every relationship requires respect to thrive. Friendships without the elements of honour and respect are usually marked by: gossip, jealousy and frequent strife. What you say about your friend in his/her absence should show how much you respect her (Proverbs 25:9-10; 11:9,12; 17:28).

7) A Godly friendship is very consistent. Your friend should be your friend at all times. Friends should love each other at all times, just the way Jesus loves us always (Proverbs 17:17).

While you hold people up to these standards, work on yourself and ask God to make you a Godly friend!

Series 3 Slavery and the Bible

Very insightful and essential read. I urge all Christians to read this. I was so happy to have stumbled upon this and I really think other people should read this too! Follow this blog also!!!!

welcome to Faith Defense Ministries

Let’s get on to another topic that needs to be addressed right now because I feel that it is a big stumbling block for people who want to know about Christianity but believes that Christianity and the bible condones slavery. This will have to be further discussed in detail in upcoming project but for now we here at Faith Defense Ministries feel compelled to get a handle over all of the mis information that has been placed out there about slavery in the bible and the way that the 17th century slave masters corrupted the words of the bible in order to suit their own needs and build this country off the backs of our ancestors. Slave masters read certain texts of the bible out to slaves in order to push their own agenda but slaves were forbidden to read. Ironically enough, slaves were beaten and killed if they…

Embracing God’s Will

David Wilkerson rightly pointed out that submitting to and embracing God’s will are not one and the same.
Submission refers to imposed conditions like “subjecting ” oneself to something or to yield to a superior force.

Embrace means to hold closely in one’s arms as a sign of affection. It also means to accept willingly and enthusiastically.

When most people think of submission, what immediately comes to mind is “force” and “discipline”. Sadly, we often view God this way. We see him as an imposer who has handed down a set of rules and commands which we have to obey. True salvation comes with understanding the benefits of God’s will. Once we have this understanding, we begin to embrace God’s will.

When we embrace, we do not obey God just because we have to. Rather, the love we have for God will manifest in our actions (without force) and ultimately our actions will reflect God’s perfect will.

While on earth, Jesus acknowledged that he was on earth to do the will of his father (John 5:30, 4:34, 6:38).

Recognising that God’s will and our will may not necessarily be the same. Jesus knew at all times that doing the Father’s will trumped everything else and this is my confession for today.

Dear Lord,

I pray for the grace to die to self will in order to fully embrace your will for my life. Help me Lord, to always choose your will at every point in my life. Whenever I am faced with life or death situations or in circumstances where choosing your will may seem so difficult, Help me O Lord to choose your will in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Purposeful Worship

It is actually routine for me to constantly check my phone in church. Like many other areas of my life the Holy Spirit is working on, I’ve had a nudge about my “bad habits” in church.

For someone else, this distraction may not be a phone. During worship, are you fully focused on the ONE you are worshipping? Does God have 100% of your heart and mind or do you wander off to problems, family, finances etc.

In Leviticus 10:3, it is apparent that God has to be glorified in our worship. For this to happen, our hearts and minds must be set on Him during worship. ‘Loose worship’ eventually leads to spiritual death.

I will urge you to attend a church where you get a proper sermon, an in-depth study of God’s word. Do not be in a hurry to leave God’s presence, devote time to God, it is the very least you could do.

Come to think of it, it is pointless to physically show up in church when your mind is elsewhere.

Dear Lord, I thank you for your Word, teach me to worship you purposefully and wholeheartedly. I bind every satanic distraction that prevents me from being focused in your presence. Forgive me for neglecting you and create in me a clean heart. Help me to worship you in spirit and in truth, In Jesus’ name. Amen

When you feel hopeless

One second, you are relishing in God’s refreshing joy and the next second, the devil tries to steal it. Story of my life. I have so much to be happy about but the devil had to remind me of the things I have to worry about and I feel like I was in a pit of hopelessness last night!

I thank God I came across 2 Samuel 22:29. I actually read the entire chapter which is one of David’s psalms of praise. And verse 29 hit me hard. This morning, I have declared and confessed it a zillion times.

God is the master of EVERY situation. The Lord will lighten my darkness. I claim it! I believe it!

Declare it: For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.

Waiting on God

Have you ever sat back to think of your life five years ago? And then compare with your life now???? Progress??? No progress???? The unexpected???? Not what you thought???? So what are you gonna do about it!???? I did this recently and it was amazing to see God’s work on my life even in areas i never could have imagined.
If you are getting depressed about how your life is going then you need to pray and take God by his word. Trust God with your life and be patient!!!! Yes, you need to be patient…sometimes it takes years for God’s plans to materialise, even when it seems God is not there…HE IS.
But you need to pray!!!!! Pray, pray and pray. There’s no feeling like being confident in God’s plans during your period of waiting. Greater is coming! I know it! I feel it!!!
Pray about the plans and ideas you have for life and if you are undecided about what you want in life, ask for God’s will to be done. Ask God to guide you in his will.

Psalms 145-15
The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.

Psalms 37:7
Rest in the Lord , and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Psalms 123:2
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

Psalm 130:5-6
I wait for the Lord , my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

Micah 7:7
Therefore I will look unto the Lord ; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

Looking unto Jesus

For as long as I can remember, I have often looked to people for happiness…friends, spouse, family. The problem with looking unto people for fulfillment and happiness is that you are setting them up to fail. I learnt this the hard way time and time again.

How crazy is it that we entrust imperfect humans with our happiness and fulfillment when we have Jesus. Jesus is the ONLY person we should look unto, keep your eyes focused  on him and watch everything else fall into place.

Our long term goal as Christians is to spend eternity with God (I cannot state this enough); inorder for this to happen, Jesus came down and took the shame on the cross. While on earth, He had a goal and He kept his eyes on the goal. Nothing stopped Him from attaining that goal.

You see, to be heavenly minded, we need to keep our eyes on God. Repent from the sin of looking unto people rather than looking unto God. Putting someone else in the place of God is idolatry and will never bring us the fulfillment we seek.

Bless the Lord

Recently I’ve had a lot going on. I am one of those people who literally draws out an outline or framework of how I want things to go and when things do not go according to my grand design, I get mad at everyone and everything.

However, the process of spiritual growth and maturity has opened me up to a different perspective on life. There are so many things I could complain about right now but I have chosen to praise God these days. This simple change has made me a much happier person and honestly life is so much better than it used to be.

My salvation in Christ is pure and while I am fully aware that righteousness does not guarantee a life without problems, the Bible is packed with assurances of comfort in times of worry, distress, uncertainty etc.

One thing is for sure, God’s praises will forever be on my lips. The Lord is great and wonderful to me. I will bless him at all times. At all times and in every situation, I will bless and praise the Lord.

Stress Not!!!

This is one of the verses that come in handy when I am stressed. It reassures me that the peace of God is not the peace of this world. Worldly things will stress me but God’s peace is ever abundant. Meaning, when I am stressed, I do not need to sulk or murmur. I can definitely wear a smile because I am a child of God and God’s peace has been made available to me.

My heart will therefore be at ease and I will fear nothing because God’s peace dwells within me. Make this your confession today! Ask God for peace and CONFESS that you will not be afraid, neither will your heart be troubled.

Knowing the voice of God

quotes_creator_20160716_194405.pngIn John 10:27, the Bible says ‘my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me’.

Being able to differentiate the voice of God from our own desires and ideas or satanic lies is very essential once one has gained salvation. When we speak to God, he responds. Therefore, children of God have no reason to blindly navigate through life, not when Jesus is our shepherd.

What we need to bear in mind is that the voice of God does not contradict the word of God.

For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven -Psalm 119:89.

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away -Luke 21:33

God will not ‘lead’ you to disobey the scriptures. E.g. God will not say to you ‘continue to keep malice with this person’

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.Galatians 1:8.

When you pray, ask God to speak to you through His word. Ask for discernment to hear His voice and ask for an obedient spirit to receive and do as his word says.

Study and meditate on the word more often. Knowledge of God’s word will prevent you from being deceived by satanic lies and manipulations.
