Praying for your children’s talents and hobbies.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning – James 1 :17

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God – 1 Peter 4:10

Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men Proverbs 22:29

I meet a lot of parents on a day to day basis, many thanks to being a school administrator. One thing parents I meet have in common is, they recognize the unique skills their children possess, they know what their children love to do and they know the activities that keep their children happy.

As our kids grow up, there is a lot to take in. We know what they love and we know what they hate and as believers, we do the very best we can to mould them in God’s ways. We teach them right from wrong and sometimes we even go the extra mile to invest in their talents. I remember enrolling my sons for piano lessons right from when they were 5 and 4 years old respectively, I was amazed at how fast they learnt and in no time they could even play the national anthem.

Soon after, God laid it in my heart to pray for my children’s hobbies, talents and skills. we spend money to develop their talents and skills, we spend money to foster their hobbies yet we somehow leave God out of the equation. The truth is, whatever we do not commit to God will not prosper (and when I say ‘prosper’ I don’t necessarily mean finances because prosperity goes way beyond that).

If you have not discovered something your child loves to do or what gifting he/she has, you could pray for God to help you discover those specific talents and hobbies. Understand that talents could be something as simple as reading, writing and even the ability to keep people calm.

Also teach your children about the parable of the talents found in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:11-27, it is a good way to explain to them how their talents, skills and hobbies are important to God and why God wants them to use their talents in a way that will glorify God.

Here is a guide to praying for your children’s talents, skills and hobbies:

  1. Thanking God: Thank God for depositing that talent, skill and hobby in your child. Thank Him for the privilege to parent a child who is interested in singing, dancing, teaching, reading, talking etc.
  2. Prayer of Stewardship: Pray that they can be good stewards of the talents, hobbies and skills that God has given them. Also pray that you will be able to guide them and teach them to use their talent, skills and hobbies in a manner that pleases God and aligns with God’s will.
  3. Prayer of fruitfulness: Pray that their talents and hobbies will produce fruits. Think of what fruits could be produced by their talents. Ultimately, all talents should be used in a way that will point others to Christ. Their gifts and talents will also make a way for them, they will excel and the works of their hands will flourish.
  4. Prayer of steadfastness: Pray that their talents will not cause them to derail from the faith. Let them stand firm in Christ and may they never deny the faith.
  5. Prayer of pruning: Pray that any skill or talent that will not glorify God or that will make your children rebel against God should be cut off.

I always encourage parents to pray continually, keep praying about their skills and talents even as they grow and discover new skills and talents.

Ask any questions relating to this in the comments, also if you have tried this, let us know. God bless you!

Praying For Your Church 1

It is so important to pray for the church you attend. Apostle Paul on several occasions prayed for the different churches he wrote letters to. Some of these instances can be seen in: 2 Thessalonians 1:11, Colossians 1:9-10, Ephesians 1:16-17, Romans 15:14-33, Philippians 1:9-11.

When it comes to praying for your church, keep in mind that it is the people (you and the others who attend) that make up the church. The Apostle, Elder, Pastor, Evangelist etc on their own can not constitute a church. To this end, when you pray for the church, you are praying not just for yourself but for the community you fellowship with.

If you think about it, not praying for your church is somewhat unfair and careless. Just a glance at the church (whatever church you attend) and you will see possible prayer points literally scattered around.

In recent times, God has laid in my heart the need to pray for my church and I am happy to share some of what I will be praying about here but bear in mind that it will not be a one off prayer. We need to continually pray for our churches during our personal devotions, prayer groups, prayer meetings etc.

Below is a guide on how I will be praying:

1. Pray for a revival in the church.

Psalm 85:6, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Habakkuk 3:2, Psalm 51:10, Acts 3:19, Psalm 19:7

We need a spiritual revival. So many of us have become so laid back in our walk with God. We have forgotten where God brought us from and where or what we could have been. A spiritual revival is the greatest need of the church of today. Churches have been overshadowed by worldliness and our prayer lives are at an all time low. We need the Holy Spirit to light a fire in us. Generally speaking, people attend churches on Sundays for show whereas prayer meetings and calls for evangelism are so poorly attended. There is a lack of love and oneness. We need God to awaken us, we need our dry bones to live again. We need to be on fire for God. We need an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need true repentance not self deception.

2. Pray For The Aged and Elderly

1 Thessalonians 5:16, Psalm 26:20, Romans 8:32, Philippians 4:19, Psalm 5:11, Psalm 46:1

I don’t know any one who wants to die young, if we have our way, we would live long enough to see our children’s children at the very least. It is never about how long we live, how we lived and our relationship with our creator is much more important. Pray that the elderly in your church will continue to remember the faithfulness of God and how he has been loving and faithful time and time again. Pray for God’s provision, Let their children and caretakers show them grace and let God supply their needs till they are called home. Pray for their eternity, at the end of their journey on earth they shall be ushered into eternal glory, let God keep them in the faith and let them flourish. Also pray that their old years would be peaceful. Let them let go of grudges, bitterness and guilt as they hold fast to God given joy, peace and laughter.

3. Pray that our churches will stay true to the message of God as contained in the Bible .

2 Timothy 4:2-3, 2 Timothy 3:1-17, Jude 1:3-4

Whether or not it is convenient especially in today’s society, we need the courage and boldness to stand up for the truth. Let the church ignore worldly sentiments and be committed to teaching the truth.

4. Pray For The Various Departments (Units) of The Church.

1 Corinthians 16:15, James 3:13, James 2:18

Pray that the members of each unit of the church serve wholeheartedly and that those who have not repented should have life changing encounters with God. Pray that their services in the house of God will not be in vain. Ask for God’s blessings upon them. As you pray, you can call the various departments/units by name e.g Ushering, Media, Choir, Sanitation, Women, Youths, Children, Security, Prison outreach etc.

5. Pray for The Leaders In Your Church.

2 Corinthians 4:1, 1 Corinthians 4:1-3, Exodus 33:13, 1 Timothy 5:17, Acts 6:4, Titus 1:7, 1 Timothy 3:8-9, Acts 6:3, 1 Peter 5:2-3.

They go by various names in various churches. There are Apostles, Elders, Deacons, Deaconesses, Pastors, Sunday School Teachers etc

Pray that they can serve God with sincerity, passion and dedication. When things get tough especially in the ministry, Let God keep them in the faith. As they lead in various aspects, let them find favour in the sight of God and let their services be pleasing and acceptable to God. Ask God to bless the works of their hands, let their careers and families flourish. Let their households be blessed with joy, comfort, laughter and peace. Let their spouses and children be sources of joy, comfort and peace. Let them be bold as lions as they stand up for the truth, let them lead and teach in love and truth. Let them show commitment, grace, generosity and kindness, Let the spirit of God guide them in all that they do, give them shepherd hearts to enable them guide the church and let their lives be rooted in Christ.

6. Pray For The Children In Your Church.

Proverbs 20:11, Ecclesiastes 12:1, Psalm 71:17, 2 Timothy 2:22, Proverbs 1:10

Pray that the children in your church will grow in God’s grace and favour. Pray that they will remember their creator in the days of their youth. Let them chase after the kingdom of God and let God sustain them till they are old. Pray for their parents/guardians and caregivers, ask God to provide for them and give them the wisdom needed to bring up the children in the fear of the Lord. Pray for God’s protection over them as they go to school, parks etc.

7. Pray for Financial Blessings.

2 Corinthians 9:6-12, Deuteronomy 8:18, Proverbs 10:22, Psalm 145:15

Pray for God to empower you and other members of the church financially so that in turn you can sponsor church projects and show generosity to those in need.

8. Pray For More Souls To Be Added To The Church.

Acts 2:47, Acts 4:4, Acts 6:7

Pray for growth through evangelism. As you preach and share the gospel of Christ, Let souls be converted, let sinners repent and let them join the church. Also let our actions win over people to God’s kingdom. Help us to be real ambassadors of Christ in all facets of life. Ask God to give you and other members of the church a genuine passion for lost souls and ask for boldness to preach the word just like the Apostles of old.

10 prayers for your newborn

It is always an exciting thing when a child is born.  As believers, we are supposed to take everything to God in prayer and we commit everything into God’s hands including the future and lives of our children.

My guess is if you are reading this, you probably just had a baby or someone you know just did and you want to lift them up in prayer. Well look no further. Here are 10 bible areas I think are worth praying over your newborn like I did for mine.

1. For God’s presence to always be with her.

Pray that in all her endeavours the presence of God will be with her. No circumstance shall break her communion with the Lord in Jesus Name.

Psalm: 145: 18. The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

Exodus: 33: 14. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
Jeremiah: 29: 13. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
1 Corinthians: 3: 16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
2. For salvation and an eternity with God

Salvation is not transferable from parent to child. That being said, we can pray for the Lord to touch the lives of our children or pray that they have an encounter with God just like Apostle Paul did. The end result of being saved is that their eternity with God is guaranteed. It is important that our children hear the voice of God and open up their hearts to Him.

Matthew: 7:13-14. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Romans: 10: 9-10. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Revelation: 3: 20. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

3. For Godly wisdom and discernment

In all areas of life, we need the Godly wisdom to guide us, we need to be able to discern what is God’s will and what is not God’s will. This is a very important area to pray on because our children will grow up and will be faced with daily decisions. It is important that they remain in God’s will.

Proverbs: 3: 13. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

Proverbs: 24: 13-14. My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

James: 1: 5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James: 3: 17. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Proverbs: 16: 16. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

Philippians: 1: 9-10. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

4. For an obedient and teachable spirit.

Pray that your child will allow herself to be corrected by the word of God and that she will submit to Godly authority, advice and counseling. Pray for the Holy Spirit to convict her whenever she goes wrong and that she will take correction well.

Ephesians: 6: 1-3. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
1 Peter: 5: 5-6. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Proverbs: 12: 1. Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

5. That she will fulfill her days

It is the prayer of every parent that their children will live long. We do not know God’s will but we know His grace, His mercies and His compassion. You can pray that God should show mercy on your child and let her live to fulfill her days, let her not die young and let God perfect everything that concerns her.

Psalm: 91: 16. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Jeremiah: 29: 11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end

Psalm: 138: 8. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

6. Family unity and togetherness

Pray that your child will be a source of joy, peace, unity and togetherness to your family. Pray that because of her, God will strengthen, renew and restore love and unity in your family. Also pray that she will be a source of joy and hope to everyone who comes in contact with her, Let the glory of God radiate through her.

Psalm: 133: 1. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Mark: 3: 25. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

7. For God’s Blessings and Grace (Favour)

God’s blessings are like no other. The blessings of God do not cause sorrow. Pray that your child will continue to find favour in the sight of God and that she will be blessed in all her endeavours.

Psalm: 45: 2. Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

Genesis: 6: 8. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Psalm: 67: 1. God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.

Numbers: 6: 24-27. The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:  The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:  The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.  And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

8. For God’s protection

God is the only sure source of protection, No one can watch over your child more than the Lord can. So commit your child to Him, Ask God to be her guide. To protect her from evil people, bad friends, bad decisions and anything in general that is not of God.

Nahum: 1: 7. The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

Psalm: 91: 7. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

9. A loving and compassionate spirit

Jesus is our example of love. Pray that your child will be as loving and compassionate to others as Jesus was. Pray that she will be guided by the love of God and she will extend this love and compassion to others.

John: 13: 34. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

1 Corinthians: 13: 4-5. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,  Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Colossians: 3: 12-13. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

10. For her health

God does not only care about our souls, He cares about our bodies too. As long as we are alive, our bodies must glorify Him. Infirmities and the rest can be prayed against. The same God who gave life to your child will keep her in health, pray that whenever sicknesses arise, God will defeat them and renew her health.

3 John: 1: 2. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Proverbs: 17: 22. A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Jeremiah: 33: 6. Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.

For this child I prayed…

One of the verses I had written down to pray on for my unborn. It is also a commitment to bring up that child in the ways of God and let God use the child however he pleases.

The Bible tells us that Hannah handed Samuel over to God without hesistation. Considering the fact that she had prayed for so long for the fruit of the womb. Many of us did not exactly pray for that long for a child, but at the point of marriage, we probably agreed to have kids or were prayed for (prayers of fruitfulness etc). Either way, we owe it to God to bring up our children in the way of the Lord.

Allow your children participate in church activities, outreaches and general service to God. There is nothing more rewarding.

Luke 18:1-8

God used a friend to remind me of this last night. I needed to be encouraged and she messaged me at the right time. Before praying, I came up with a few resolutions (for lack of a better word):

  • I will persist in prayer until the answer comes
  • I will keep my requests constantly before God
  • I will live for God day by day
  • I believe that God will answer
  • I live by faith, I will not give up
  • When God delays, It is with reason
  • When I persist in prayer, I will grow in character, faith and hope
  • If evil judges can yield to constant pressure, how much more our loving Father in heaven
  • God loves me, God will hear me

Praying For Your Children

The disciples tried to hinder the children from coming to Jesus. Many times, there are several hindrances especially in the world of today that could hinder our kids from following Christ.
We need to persistently cover them in prayers and let God take care of them. Jesus wants our children, he wants to care for them, he wants to protect them.
Sometimes we have no control over what our kids are exposed to (both physically and spiritually)be it in school, on the playground, parks etc. They are a gift from God!!! We owe it to God and to them to pray for them. Christ is the only sure protector.

Psalm 51- Psalm of Repentance

Psalm 51:1-12

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Prayer of Salvation

Heavenly Father,

I come to you this day as a sinner. I acknowledge that I have sinned and come short of your glory, I repent of all my sins and I confess that Jesus is Lord and I believe that Jesus died for my sins and was risen from the dead by the power of God. I believe in my heart that Jesus is Lord and i accept Him as my Lord and Saviour. I thank you for the gift of life and I thank you for saving me today. Give me the grace to live for you from now henceforth, In Jesus’ name. Amen!!!
